Why were the Castlevania games for Nintendo systems so awful?

Vampire Killer > Castlevania
Rondo of Blood > Dracula's Curse
Bloodlines > Super Castlevania IV
Chronicles > Adventure ReBirth
Symphony of the Night > GBA/DS

And yet, the Nintendo games are the ones people only ever praise.
