Why not? n64 has some pretty good looking 2D games, but since its forte was 3D, and producing for the system was expensive as hell, and what the public wanted at the moment like crazy was 3D, developing 2D for N64 was kind of commercial suicide.

Wonder Projecr J2.
The first Wonder Project on SNES you raise a robot boy (similar to Pinocchio), but on WP J2 you raise a girl, Josette.

I think devs just didn't try a lot of 2D on the N64 because it was a machine that was built mostly for 3D and that's what the consumers wanted back then, but it can do pretty nice 2D.
Wonder Project J2 is an early N64 title and it looks amazing.

There's an english patch, however I believe in emulators it crashes at the end, so you'll need an Everdrive 64 to play the patched ROM on a real console.

Very much worth it though.

wonder project j2 has an english translation patch but be aware the emulation might make the game crash at the end. Best bet is to play on the actual hard if you have an everdrive.

Wonder Project J2, Another N64 gem that sadly wasn't released outside of Japan, but luckily there's an english translation patch now.
A very unique kind of "raise your daughterfu simulator" with RPG elements and what not, Princess Makers fans will love this.
Last time I tried, emulation for this wasn't too good and I believe there's some glitches that render it unplayable at the end, but you should be good with an Everdrive and a patched ROM.
