Software quake 2 was ugly due to pc limitations that carmack fixed it in Q3A and RTCW, and later Raven with their games.

An anon posted a patched software mode for 3.24 that was at KmQuake2 forums/Quake2Cafe since the ruskies loves Q2 with their souls in it.

look at the mission packs, fan expansions and maps, it uses them better than the vanilla game.
Plus Q2 enemies can be unpredictable assholes like the gunner, because why not fuse an ogre with a chainguner to see what happens
