My household briefly had one. Great little system if you like Hudson IPs, especially Bomberman and shooters. I still emulate some of those games to this day.

My only gripes are the release of SuperGrafx and the CD add-on. Add-ons in general were a bad idea. Consumers did not like having to pay for additional hardware after dishing out hundreds of dollars for the base unit. They should have kept designing games that worked with the original hardware and left it at that.

Hudson's Soldier series. The ports of R-Type, Gradius and Salamander were also nice, but they're available on at least a dozen other platforms. I don't think Soldier saw any ports until much later with PSP and PSN.

They're by no means uncommon, but I seem to be the only one on /vr/ with any vested interest in Hudson's Soldier games. For most people, the games are either too easy or too hard. Plus not that many people ever got their hands on a PCE / TG16 outside of Japan.

Awesome soundtracks, though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o05vng38XA4

>R-Type or Gradius
>no mention of Star Soldier

Too bad the PCE wasn't more popular outside of Japan. The Soldier games seem to be regarded as rather obscure by shmup fanbases.

>So what is the best shmup for the regular PC-Engine/Turbografx overall?

Of course that's a matter of opinion, but I really enjoyed Super Star Soldier and Final Soldier. Final Soldier feels very casual in comparison, but the stage design was really nice

There's also a nice port of the original arcade Gradius. If I'm not mistaken, I think that version included an exclusive bonus stage, too.

I grew up with Sega and TG16 as well. As much as I may hate Nintendo's corporate practices (especially these days) I still have to concede that SNES has a superior selection of games, in my opinion. That isn't to say I don't play classic Sega titles anymore.

As far as TG16 goes, it has some great shooters, and Bomberman. I still play all the Star Soldier sequels from time to time.
