I'm eagerly awaiting my Steam Deck, coming by Monday or Tuesday.

I paid around $100 for the Super CD add-on in 2019 because I was too impatient to wait for SSDS3 stock to come back. Didn't come with AV cables, AC adapter, one of the plastic gears was broken, missing teeth. Spent another $25-$30 to get all those and it worked great for a few years. Oh, if you do buy one, make sure it has the power connector that goes from the add-on to the PCE itself. For some reason, stock ones on their own go for retarded prices, like up to $120.

Now it doesn't power on anymore and I'm thinking of just donating it to someone who knows a thing or two about fixing them and likes PC Engine CD games. I eventually got my SSDS3 last year anyway.

the fact that TO aren't selling new stock of the first model is fucked up. The extra SuperGrafx support is not worth the price increase IMO.

Any text-heavy game from Japan that isn't accessible if you don't already know the language, or shitty sports games.

If you really don't want to emulate, get a core system and the ODE for it. The CD attachments WILL fail and it'll cost you more time and money in the long run to recap them and repair the drives. My Super CD shit the bed a few months ago after I had already gotten my Super SD ODE.

I just plug it into the wall with the power cord it came with from Japan, and I use a Genesis 2 composite cable connected to the ODE since it has video out. If you have the Japanese PCE, it won't run US HuCards and vice-versa. The CD games are region-free and there's no copy protection either.

What is your opinion about this machine?
Bought one around 3 years ago, and it's up there as one of my favorite consoles. Held back by NEC's awful marketing. Deserved much better outside Japan. Had a really long run of support, outlasted the two systems designed to be the followups (Supergrafx and PC-FX). I think the last officially released game was Dead of the Brain 1 & 2 in 1999.

PC Engine multi-taps those aren't that expensive to be fair. But even then, I can't justify buying one right now. I'll buy one if I ever get a second 6-button controller.

you can find OK deals on ebay for PC Engine stuff if you're willing to wait. One of the more expensive accessories being the junk Super CD Rom2 unit. I needed to replace the main CD drive gear. And now I need to fix it again if I ever what to use it again, because it won't power on anymore.

it's honestly a great purchase. Especially after they released a firmware update that completely fixed the UI. It used to be a fucking mess.

it's II by default but now you can change it to I, which works better for my brain
