Look at how badass Chris and Barry are, look at how adorable Rebecca is, look at how Wesker looks like Johnny Bravo.

The rest of the game either had it's sequences done in the engine, or there'd be a really fucking ugly CG animation playing.
The zombie there is a CG animation, but he actually works because of how fucking unsettling and terrifying he is.

As a rule of thumb, the western releases are usually harder than the Japanese versions (since Japan never had game rentals, you either bought the game or borrowed it from a friend). Here's a handy copypasta from an old /vr/ thread.

The amount of damage taken from enemies is increased in the US versions of RE. It varies from game to game and by enemy type, but you take roughly 20% more damage in the US versions of early RE games. Beginner mode in RE: Director's Cut makes you SLIGHTLY more durable than you would've been in the JP normal mode.
