For me it's actually almost all of 5th gen entirely. All the consoles disappointed me, Saturn less than others in some ways but it's unpopularity and demise highlighted my feelings. I thought then and still do, that the console makers jumped into 3D too early. 2D games from 5th gen still look and play really well, but I think most 3D games have aged horribly. To this day the N64 is the only Nintendo console I never got because they leaned into it the hardest and there was so little else. I think had the focus stayed on 2D and 3D enhanced 2D games like SotN, Breath of Fire 4 etc and the consoles put their weight into better 2D it would have been a much stronger generation over all.

>The 2D games of the era still look absolutely gorgeous and usually the slowdowns that plagued the previous generations was solved
Fifth gen gaming should have just been 16bit gaming on steroids.
Homeconsole 3D only got good with the next generations hardware.

Why was the Saturn so technically weak compared to the PS1 and N64?

PS1 > Saturn > N64
The PS1 has an obscene amount of quality games and many great games to discover from abroad. Games run well, cover a large variety of genres and was even where numerous genres were invented.
Saturn has many excellent games, most of which are arcade style games which are great for replaying, many of which are going to be new experience. Most of the arcade conversions for Saturn are better than arcade perfect and are often the definitive versions for competition play. There's also a massive import library. It's also the most popular 5th gen console for home brew and translations right now, giving it a promising future.
N64 has aged the poorest of the 3. Most of its best games have been ported to far more capable platforms, resulting in versions that run at higher resolution and thankfully far better framerates. Many of its biggest titles are no longer exclusive and beyond that there are very few games to discover. The import library is frankly pathetic and the N64 experience today is about repairing faulty controllers, coping over poor video output and rationalizing its increasing irrelevance as time goes on despite its previous reputation.

Can we be real for a second please. These consoles are a complete joke. They are like a caveman's idea of what hardware is compared to PC. They had almost no memory or graphical prowess at all, to the point where even something like DOOM had to be downgraded. They had no real RPGs, like Diablo, Fallout, or Planescape, and they had no real RTS or strategy games because the memory, resolution and input was far too lacking. These consoles have extremely low framerates and animation counts, and really low polygon and simple level design. Put the PS1 in the trash and try out Quake just one time and you will see the difference.

The best generation ever
Although, I never played any Saturn games, I'm sure it had its merits.
I prefer the N64 overall since I like 3D platformers, FPS, and action-adventure games. 4 player multiplayer was always a blast too.
The PS1 had some good stuff as well. It had more of the genres I'm not interested in (JRPGs, fighters, racing, etc.) but that's fine - People have genres they like. What little of the PS1's library I got to play I ended up enjoying (Spyro, Crash, Croc, classic GTA, etc.
I should pick up some PS1 games one of these days to play on my PS3.

Anyways, 5th gen was best gen because it was that "WOW" factor of coming from 2D and jumping to 3D that made it a monumental era of gaming. It was like a digital frontier, in a sense - So many games were treading new ground resulting in new experiences all around.

Is it just me, or have 90% of the games from the fifth gen aged really, really badly?

Make your case.

Which is the best of the fifth generation and why?

I know lots of indie-type games are done in a "retro" 8-bit or 16-bit style, but are there any that try to emulate the look/feel of 5th Gen 3D?

I know a lot of people dislike that look and claim that it's aged poorly, but I personally find it quite charming,

Should 32/64-bit systems be allowed on /vr/? They don't seem very retro.

What is even the point of 5th generation console wars? Each of the three main consoles during that generation were fairly genre specialized.

Saturn for 2D games (all genres) and arcade ports

PlayStation for RPGs, sports other than wrestling, vehicle combat games, non-open world platformers, and an all-genre-rounder otherwise.

N64 for open-world platform games, FPS, wrestling, and multiplayer games.

So which multiplatform games were best on Playstation, Saturn and Nintendo 64?

I'm really interested to know the differences between versions.

I was recently watching a video about the development of the N64 and the 5th gen in general. What are some cool things about the 5th gen that most people don't know about?

For example, in games like Perfect Dark, Banjo-Tooie, and Conker's Bad Fur Day, Rare would overlay monochrome bitmaps and color them to give the illusion of larger textures. The tree leaf textures in DK64 are monochrome bitmaps that are colored green.

Neither are really better in my opinion. They both have their strengths and weaknesses.
and even though it was fated for disaster, i still consider the Saturn a contender in the 5th gen.

Given equal price, is there any sane reason why anybody would choose the Sega Saturn over the Sony Playstation if you could only have one in say, 1997?

If so, I'd like to hear the reasons. Yes I know the Saturn had some damn good exclusives on it, but was it enough?
