To praise Koudelka for something, it was one of the few games back then that used motion capture for its cutscenes. The developers hired stage actors, if I recall correctly. This is why the animations look great and naturalistic. The atmosphere and sound design are also good, despite the background being messy in some areas. It's unfortunate that the gameplay is so atrocious, considering it has a lot going for it.
