One device dying: being in most cases your PC means all your games are gone till you get a new PC if you don't have another backup PC, like a laptop or something.
It doesn't really matter about 'physical' whatever, just as much as it matters about the device you're playing it on. You can play SNES games on a N3DS, PSP, Vita, any windows/Linux/Mac/Android device.
