Of course you should master the original, vanilla game first but after that there's literally nothing wrong with playing mods. The reason why the Doom community is still so active over 30 years later is because of mods, and Source games wouldn't be the same without mods either
Also, there's this weird thing in the vidya community where people refuse to play mods literally just because they're unofficial. They could be the exact same but with a Nintendo official seal slapped on it and suddenly it would be ok to play them. It's weird how people put how official something is above how fun it is

The actual truth is: the saturn was the gateway to play the latest and greatest arcade games from capcom, snk, sega, taito, psikyo and so on for a fraction of the price of the respective jamma boards. It was that simple. A lot of those SS ports have more content, characters, stages than the arcade games.
