I've only played Perdition's Gate, but I want to lean against a no on it.

It's not bad, there's some pretty good levels and ideas in there, but it's so painfully thinly spread. The Hell 2 Pay development team was brought in to fill in the mapslots on Perdition's Gate, and from what I've heard of H2P, this really shows, the last third of the game is mostly a series of very brief, small, and sparsely populated levels, which are very samey, you see some of this earlier, but it gets it the worst by the last parts.

The readme file, titlescreen, and even some of the story texts and intermissions (involving a curious method of putting little story texts on the level name graphics), they give you an image in your head, which I found it mostly failed to deliver on, and any time it actually does try, it does so very briefly, the interesting ideas it has are barely explored at all.
Combine this with the readme promising that the maps are supposed to be really hard and challenging, which they just aren't (aside from Map 30, which ends as abruptly like most the other levels).

I felt VERY blueballed by Perdition's Gate, but I can't outright hate it, because there's enough glimpses of something good and interesting that I can't call it trash, I just would not recommend it unless you find the premise really interesting.
Someone should really salvage the better textures and music tracks and do a themed episode around them. Perdition's Gate The Way Wraith Didn't?

Really not worth playing, IMO.
It promised to be very challenging in its readme, but ends up being really easy, very disappointing. For instance a late level can be like 20ish enemies, and most of them are imps, with some revenants, pinkies and cacos, and the level is like 4 minutes long with no kind of interesting or stimulating progression.

The levels are mostly fairly dull, and usually kind of short. Right around the middle of the megawad, some interesting things start to happen, the promise of exciting new visual themes and level designs, but then it drops that shit like a bad habit, and NEVER looks back at it, essentially introducing a series of all new textures and a visual theme, for a detour, to pretty much abandon it.
Pic related isn't a visual you ever get to see in the game, which is disappointing, because something like this would be cool as fuck, even with the limitations of Doom.

I wouldn't say that Perdition's Gate is outright bad, because it isn't, there's good glimpses and highlights here and there, but they're far too few and far between, and packed with levels in which over half of them feels like "The Contractual Obligation", as if someone were just obligated to make a level, and he doesn't kind of feel like doing it, so his level feels phoned in as fuck, and they're just really visually dull, too, and there's neat ideas which are simply not explored much at all.
I think you could probably cut it all down to like 10 levels, and get a better experience out of it.
It's hard to recommend, but it's also hard to just outright hate with a passion. Someone should salvage some of those space hell textures and make something much more cool with them some day, because they have far more mileage than this.

Yeah. I don't know if this was in during the time they were trying to pitch it to iD, or if that art got made when it was attached to Wraith Corp. It's phenomenally ugly to look at.

Worst of it all is that the titlescreen really plays into the whole 'demonic constructs, living worlds, and biomechanics' angle, but it's so preciously rare and used so little in the actual game.
You expect some sort of epic battle in outer space on some platform made out of corpses and living demonic flesh. There's like maybe a few minutes of that in the entire game and it doesn't look anything like this. It looks cool by its own merit, but it's still just barely there. You could erase half of the map in the game and it would genuinely improve the experience.

I wouldn't say that it's bad, or that people shouldn't play it, there's some cool stuff to look at, and I can see what there is to like, but it's so hard to say "Perdition's Gate? Oh yeah, totally check it out!"
I think if anything, the assets should be pillaged and used to make like an 11 map episode focused on hell in outer space, one that is much better. Or someone makes new assets vaguely based on these aesthetics.

It feels like a really neat idea that's wasted on mediocrity.

If Perdition's Gate wasn't already hurt by it's weak first cour, then the fact that this part of the game made up the free demo, probably contributed to a lack of interest. I mean you really don't get to see any of the actually interesting levels.
It's only first in Map 13 and then Map 15 where you get to see anything that's interesting, and it's around this time it starts to actually try to challenge you.

I looked at this for a while, sitting in my folder, having all these pictures in my head of what it would be like, a fabled lost episode of Final Doom, the one that didn't make it in time, and which for a long period of time was hard to find. What wonders lied within?
Some, it turns out, but it's just on a hell of a slow boil.

If you want more of Team TNT's earlier stuff, Perdition's Gate was meant to be submitted to iD Software as part of the Final Doom package, but "the window of opportunity closed" before they could pitch it.
It's freeware now, and I've been intending to check it out, because I really like their old style.

Honestly, I love it. The maps are nice and short, they have the very distinct 94/95 feel to them, it was released with a book accompaniment and it was a commercial release.

Some of the maps are quite cool where as other areas are pretty underdetailed but when played in Crispy or Chocolate Doom I don't mind at all. The fact that it was a commercial release with a book reeeally knocks it up a notch for me.

I played through the ZDoom version in Crispy Doom and it worked great except E4 didn't work but meh, that was added for the ZDoom version so whatever.
