It's fun as fuck the first time you play it but I feel like the fun is a little too surface level.
Don't get me wrong, it's a really good game everyone should play, but I feel like a truly excellent game is one you can play dozens and dozens of times without getting tired. SMW wore out it's welcome with me just a bit too early.
For comparison, the first and second times you play through a 2D Metroid game can feel totally different. On my first playthroughs I'm often shuffling through like a cowardly slug, but by my second or third time I'm bouncing off the walls like ping pong ball on helium.
Castlevania is also quite similar. Enemies that are huge roadblocks to a new player can become speedbumps to a veteran who knows how to backdash and aim and pick their weapons.
SMW doesn't let me interact with the world in a new way as I get better at it, so each playthrough just feels the same to me. Once I'd gotten all the coins and exits I just felt like I'd done everything there ever was to do in the game and I haven't touched it since.
It's an impressive game for a lot of reasons but I just can't see it ever being one of my favorites.
