You complain about STORY and you're gonna write off my post as trolling but I DO in fact think shmups feel empty without one.
For one, take Gekirindan, Dimahoo, Sengeki Striker and Giga Wing Generations, these are all great games but I was really weirded out how they just abruptly end with a credits roll.
Specially in the case of Giga Wing and Dimahoo where previous games in the series had unique English translated endings for every playable character but in the new ones they just end with a generic credit roll instead. Talk about anti-climatic.
It felt like they ran out of budget, specially in the case of Gekirindan where the last boss only has one pattern and the time traveling motif of the game never pays out. I wanted to know more about those cool characters like the endings in Batrider.
