Pic related. It has been shocking seeing just how few games are actually worth playing on this thing. Real piece of shit compared with the rest of the excellent 16-bit era.

Why do "people" (aka millennials) seem to universally agree it's the best console of all time while simultaneously not being able to name its greatest games without just resorting to the same handful of games or padding it with a bunch of Nintendo IP shovelware?

Pic related. The NES, whilst not the global phenomenon that Americans would have you believe, was still a very large success for Nintendo, granting them near monopoly status in a few countries. Then the PC Engine came out, to which Nintendo had no response. Then the Mega Drive came out, and still no response. It wasn't until 2 years later that Nintendo finally released a successor, which largely fell flat because of it's immediately apparent inability to play action games at a decent speed (Gradius 3, Super R-Type) which is mostly thanks the "withered technology" approach Nintendo was pushing, resulted in largely underwhelming hardware design with a slow CPU, numerous bottlenecks, lower resolution, and the only obvious advantage over it's peers being the "mode 7" fake 3D effect, which was a gimmick that could not sustain an entire console. During the SNES lifespan, Nintendo lost half of they're market share to Sega, and, counting all of the Mega Drive variations which were sold for years beyond the SNES, were never able to surpass the Mega Drive's total sales and worldwide popularity. This was the beginning of they're decline into irrelevancy, which was the opening Sony needed to sweep in and dominate the gaming industry.
It didn't even sell as much as the NES. Pretty sad!

>consoles that aged poorly
>the Amiga
That's a computer. Let's talk about a real console that aged poorly, pic related.
>2.68 mhz, which is 3 TIMES slower than ALL it's competitors, including the 5 years older Amiga
>lower resolution than ALL it's competitors
>games library consists entirely of throwaway Nintendo shovelware, RPG Maker shit primarily from Squaresoft before they hit their prime on the PlayStation, and underwhelming versions of games where far better alternatives exist on the many better hardwares of the era
The only people who still like this piece of garbage are those who were unfortunate enough to have grown up without anything better.

This is the only correct answer. People put it on a pedestal as the "best console EVAR!!" despite having no games. No, you're library of trite Nintendo IP's, Squaresoft's RPG Maker shit from before they hit their prime on the PlayStation, and buckets of inferior ports and versions of games better played elsewhere do not make for a good console. The 16-bit era was the finest era in gaming by a long shot, but the shit SNES had staggeringly little to do with it.

The SNES is garbage. The games are all trite Nintendo IP's or Squaresoft RPG Maker shit from before they hit their prime on the PlayStation. Outside of that, it has nothing to offer. Every other 16-bit platform is leagues ahead, both technically and in terms of games library. This is currently still an unpopular opinion, though I find more people agreeing with it now than ever before, and it pleases me to see people are finally acquiring taste.

Pic related, without a doubt. If it's not trite and overplayed cookie cutter Nintendo IP's, then it's RPG Maker JRPG's, or horse racing simulators.

It started with this piece of shit.
>Hardware is so slow and bottlenecked that most action genres cannot be done whatsoever without crippling slowdowns
>Developers hate working on it to the extent that they break off into new companies to work with something else
>It's game library consists entirely of trite Nintendo IP's, cookie cutter SquareSoft JRPG's from before they hit their prime on the PlayStation, and games with superior alternatives on competitors, Castlevania and Contra and so on
>"Best console EVAR!!!"
The N64's poor performance was just a continuation of the momentum that Nintendo had started on the SNES. The same people holding up the N64 as one of the "greatest consoles" are the same ones doing the same for the SNES, despite both of their obvious and glaring flaws.

It's bad. Shitty, trite Nintendo IP's, PoundLand versions of SquareSoft titles from before they hit their prime on the PlayStation, and the rest is games that were held back by the horribly bottlenecked hardware. The 16-bit era was one of the finest eras of gaming, and this 2.68 mhz piece of shit had nothing to do with it.

I am going to keep saying it everywhere where it is applicable.

Sorry but it's this. Terrible hardware design, casualised and "family friendly" games, which were responsible for the sad decline and eventual end of the arcade era. Sony's PlayStation consoles were simply attempts to turn that formula into something decent, which they succeeded at.

It's bad. The games are so slow and dull compared to it's competitors, particularly the Mega Drive and PC Engine, but also the Neo Geo, X68000, and even Amiga in some instances. There is rarely any action, a serious lack of parallax scrolling effects and other visual flair that was prevalent on other 16-bit hardware, oftentimes the physics are terrible, and it still manages to slow down constantly. I shall never understand the popularity of this underwhelming and overrated console.

They've never been good, it has just taken some longer to realise than others.
Take, for example, the SNES, which runs at a mere 1/3 the speed compared to ALL it's competitors, including not only the 2 years older Mega Drive, but even including the 3 years older PC Engine, and 5 years older Amiga.

It's bad. Tons of slowdowns, low resolution graphics with weird and anemic colours, muffled and lifeless audio. The only games anyone likes for this thing are the same list of 10 overrated Nintendo IPs (Mario, Zelda, the list goes on) and pre-Playstation Squaresoft games, before they hit their prime. It has literally nothing going for it. The Mega Drive is vastly better. Hell, the PC Engine is vastly better. The Neo Geo, the X68000, 16-bit arcade games, all far better. Shit, I would rank the Amiga higher. I just do not see the appeal whatsoever.

Don't care about Nintendo IPs, don't care about pre-PSX Squaresoft JRPGs, multiplats are better on the Mega Drive, and the few remaining games it has are rife with slowdowns. Possibly an unpopular opinion, but I just never saw the appeal.
