Yeah, turns out Diablo sucks for modding. I tried it myself and was able to get the changes to save, but this only crashes the game when you get to the parts that were changed. So from this, it seems that Diablo is extremely hardcoded and requires hexediting to do anything.

What are you even trying to achieve anyways? If you just want to swap sprites so that you can have different character stats/speeds, then you'd be better off using some old modding tools, like ModStudio or Ezmodmaker.
