I find VII's cast really strong personally. After his weird super muscular phase it seems for VII toriyama was trying to go for more of a look based on the original art for I-IV. The characters are more cartoon like in their bodies and behavior, I like it alot.

I really enjoy Mervyn a lot. Cool to see an experienced old man as a party member.

Orgodemeir never completely wiped out Faraday's population, just severly lowered it by killing many of the villagers. Orgodemeir is more of a trickster then the other antagonists. Some of the things he does are for none other then just his own amusement. He's batshit insane and obsessed with himself, hence his "beautiful" form.

VII was a return to his more classic style after his super buff phase seen for V/VI. VII has my favorite character design in the series, the more cartoony proportions fit DQ better.

As for the hero of VII he's suppose to look like a dweeby weakling, someone not meant to be the hero. This kid who comes from bumfuck nowhere was the hero this time. He's my favorite hero of the series, great design and background.
