Most of them drop pretty seldom, you get like a couple which are almost handed to you, but you can easily miss 80% or 90% of them if you don't go grinding for them.
Some of them are fairly useful (like the circling fireballs/iceballs), a lot are pretty fucking dubious (such as slowly gaining experience from exploring the map), some are largely redundant (there's a fire whip and a fire sword, etc), and the game will not explain to you how they are used, so without a guide or a lot of experimentation, you may straight up not figure out what some combinations of cards actually do; while the early stuff like the Mercury, Jupiter, and Mars card is really straight forward, stuff like Neptune or Pluto is obtuse.

The game is also very stingy with item drops, and items are of pretty limited use, again you could easily miss a lot of stuff without going through the effort of grinding for them.
Overall, Circle Of The Moon feels like a reaction to Symphony Of The Night's reckless excess of powerful and useful items, by giving you far weaker equipment and far less drops.

If you wanted to you could plain not use the cards at all, and that's doable, there's even an unlockable gamemode for that I think, and you could probably ignore using items if you wanted to as well, because the help they provide is actually pretty modest. The very best equipment in the game requires you to go through a long-ass challenge arena that basically doesn't let you use magic (constantly drains your MP bar very fast), and the reward you get is kind of meh, unless you had the luck to find one of the rare cards in there, which can be fairly powerful.

I couldn't say if you would actually like Circle Of The Moon if what you really prefer is Classicvania, but it's by far the least Iga of the Metroidvanias.
