was never what sonic was supposed to be and is exactly my point. neets who grew up on aosth are still mad at sega 20+ years after the fact for not abiding by their fanfiction version of what sonic is

what would be the best way to project video game art on to a wall such as picrel? Would it look good or shitty?

My autist headcanon used to be that CD took place after the rest. It just felt appropriate, CD seems more "grandiose" than the others. Eggman's not just fooling around with robots and death lasers, he's trying to conquer time itself, and a whole world is ruined and mechanized in-game if you fail. Sonic goes on his most important adventure without Tails or Knuckles to back him up. But obviously it doesn't really make sense from the perspective of Metal Sonic and Amy going on to appear in a bunch of other stuff even before Adventure came out, plus now there's Mania.

3&K = CD > S1 > S2

Please remember to ignore retards who treat S3 and its second half as different standalone games.

>People jump into the game expecting Sonic 2 with some extra gimmick
>"WTF why can't I time travel on demand!? what do you mean I can't just hold right and beat the game!? FUCKING BULLSHIT, SHIT LEVEL DESIGN AAAH STOP HITTING ME I'M SUPPOSED TO BE GOOD AT SANIC!!! WTF BROS"
>"Sonic (CD) was never good - anon 2019

At this point I don't expect anyone to really get the game or why some people like it so much.
It's the only sonic game with some kind of skill entry barrier and it really shows.
I personally love the game but you really need to learn how to play it and appreciate it to truly understand.

It's a good game that's also very divisive among the fanbase.
I personally always loved Sonic 1 and its unique artstyle so this game is obviously a direct upgrade in that regard with even more higher psychedelic levels.
Talking about levels, the designs are not as bad as people make it out to be. They're just playing it wrong by holding right and expecting Sonic 2, while ignoring the time travelling mechanic because they also belive they should time travel on demand instead of having to earn it by getting gud. You can easily spot people who didn't even bother with it when they say "Time travelling is annoying cuz I got hit by an enemy" or "The level design is shit cuz I can't hold right and time travel for free".
Music is amazing and probably one of my favourite Sonic OSTs.
Bosses, while on the easy side are way more creative than the classic "hit the level themed eggmobile 8 times" of the other genesis games.
Intro and outro movies are top quality stuff.
Overall I think the only legit flaws of the game are the unused future levels and the underwhelming final boss. You can also complain about WW, but the only real problem with that level is that it forces you to take the lower path instead of the upper path being just harder.

I love the game for the art direction and music, it's like Sonic 1 on steroids for that.

However, gameplay wise it falls a bit flat.
The idea of making an exploration based sonic game is awesome, and in fact is the only sonic where I don't rush to the end of the stage.
However, exploration clashed a bit with the speed part of sonic, not inherently, but because the level design didn't use sonic speed and pinball mechanics to platform but relegated the exploration to old, classic square platforms.
Not only, but the time traveling mechanic was annoying as hell, since you had zero control over it, except slowing down.

So you end up with levels where you have constantly to stop to look around, stop to avoid time traveling (or to preserve ticket you needed on a too small ramp) while sometimes entering small sections that have bumpers and springs all over the place made to travel, which have the same feeling as modern boosters.

A good initial fix would have been to have only past and present in act1/2 (future is useless there anyway, keep it for the 3rd), and have time travel start when you press a button while running, so you can activate when you need it and you can keep your momentum when you don't.
Then you could have "smoother" levels where sonic's physics can be put to use without worrying that the player is picking up too much/less speed
