The thing is that MNsG, as ambitious as it was, was more like an adventure game, I guess like a fully realized 3D version of the more adventure-like Goemon games.
GGA does indeed go back to the side-scroller formula of the SNES games but I don't see it as a step backwards, more like it's the epitome of the series. I think Goemon should be a side-scroller platforming action series. I loved MNsG for its story, adventure elements and scope, but as much as I love that game and could play it over and over, I'll still prefer side-scrolling action. And I think GGA excels at that, it's like a celebration of the classic games.
At any rate, it's great that we have both kind of games and both were released in the west.
