Alright, I have now done the following:

Made a party consisting a paladin, lark, cleric and mage.
Spend a good while repelling orc and undeading skeletons.
Gained just enough levels for the pirate ships to start appearing.
Got mystic armor and mystic sword for everyone.
Spend shitloads of time grinding for gold and then going to Ambrosia to level up my mage's int stat which is now maxed out.

Am I ready for the dungeons now or should I max out my cleric's wis first?

I will definitely try this out. Ultima 3 is a game I have tried to beat many games but have always given up because how ass the game is or due to losing interest when trying to grind for money so I could increase my stats at the shrines. The unbalanced classes (of which half are fucking worthless), the way game threads experience and leveling up and the ridiculous amount of grinding for money/stats are a shame as I really like the idea/concept of this game but the execution made it almost impossible to enjoy it.

As a sidenote I quickly tried Final Fantasy Legends and Inindo out and they seemed decent. Can someone tell me more about >>2405041 ?

An specified area you have to go through but can't return to at least without visiting other area or level select screen first?
For example I wouldn't could Metroid as a level as all areas are connected and you can backtrack anywhere at any point.

No one said that Donkey Country is a bad game or that it has a bad gameplay, the question is whether or not its one of those games that eventually lead to the graphics > everything else mindset. How would I put this... a genuinely good games/movies that deserve the success and the praise they got can have less desirable effects in longer run for example it's more than likely that the success of the movie Fast and Furious affected the direction Need for Speed series went after Porsche Unleashed and ruined one of my favorite racing game series.

Also while I and many people here like FFVII its commercial success had many undesirable side-effects, for one Cloud gave a template for the brooding "emo" main character many RPGs used afterwards and the fact it basically made RPGs mainstream (instead of being a relatively unpopular niche genre) overnight meant RPGs started getting simplified in order to appeal to broader audience more or less losing the explore the world in order to learn more about it and it's characters and what you supposed to do next aspect the whole genre was supposed to be about in the first place.
