FF9 is loved because it saved the franchise after the disaster that was FF8. The fact that it did so while paying homage to all the "traditional" final fantasy elements, and thus also serving as a swansong to the "old" era of final fantasy, causes people to reflect highly on the game. It's true the game feels rushed and unfinished in places, but none of that matters since all it had to do was be better than FF8, which is succeeded with flying colors.

Putting the fantasy back in Final Fantasy is kind of the point. It's supposed to be a nod to the series. Though admittedly, 9 is my favorite because it's the cutest.

It is defining. A near perfect FF, perhaps not technologically (slow battles, sure) but absolutely thematically, musically, core gameplay and the imaginativeness of it all. Not to come again. A good book, and the author has passed.

Nice for a replay every couple of years, remind me that I can still love this hobby.
