42 and 44 use 600tvl tubes. 40 apparently uses lower tier tubes, so I'm not sure about it.
It should be noted the 44 will take YPbPr where the 42 will not; In turn, it has a Digital RGB input that could possibly be used for old computers over CGA/EGA.

Ikegami's shadowmask based professional equipment has a very good reputation. Those two sets seem pretty well comparable.
Same general inputs accepted(Ikegami accepts some industry digital standards, but these aren't really something you're likely to use).
Approx same TVL

Ikegami might be ever so slightly larger, but that may be canceled out by the barrel shape of the Sony's tube.
Finding information/parts or what have you for the 804* series would likely be simpler than the TM10-17RA.

In the same respect, the Sony could very well end up being more complicated inside, with more boards and the like; That could be a pro though, considering your plans.
