A lot of Gen 1 pokemon had way simpler designs than some of their later mons though. In fact theyre only getting more complex every gen, clearly the show and merchandising play second base to making mons. Gen 2 was still the awkward transition period for pokemon before TPC really solidified and streamlined their pipeline.
