Here's some points of discussion:

1.) Project showoffs
2.) Hacking help
3.) ROM hack recommendations

Our ROM hack recommendation list can be found below:

Every hack featured on the list above can be downloaded at:

Can't remember the last time I saw this thread, and with all the threads popping up about translations and romhacks, I figured we could use this again.

Metroid 1 is my favourite Metroid. It's the only one close to being challenging. It's fun to draw your own map with your own symbols instead of the game just out-right giving it to you. The atmosphere is great.

The only problem I got is that you start with no health whenever you die/start up the game again. It's kind of boring to farm health just to get on with your adventure. Also, the save codes suck, I wish the non-Japanese cartridges had a battery.

I love this game. I enjoy it more than Super Metroid because of the harder difficulty, the feeling of loneliness and that you have to draw your own map. The exploration is much stronger when you have to draw your own map with your own symbols.

The only thing I don't like with Metroid 1 is the horrendous long code and that you start with almost no energy everytime you play. To farm life for the first ten minutes everytime you want to continue playing sucks.

Another favourite quality of life hack of mine is Metroid + Saving.

It does more than simply re-introduce the battery saving that the Famicom Disk System release featured, it has a nice new save menu that shows your progress.

More than that:
>Resuming from a save retains your energy, no having to farm energy from a mere 30 points
>There's an added mini-map function, although it doesn't show where you've been, nor hide where you haven't been
>It allows you to carry both the wave and ice beam upgrades, rather than swap between them.

It allows you to sink your teeth into the original Metroid adventure without the hassle of not yet conceived standards. I would understand purists disagreeing with the mini-map inclusion, but I think it's justified when it emulates what future games would do, especially in a game that so heavily recycles screen sections whilst navigating corridors.

This hack is the tits. Adds a map and save capability. You can even see the equipment you've collected on a particular save file.

Just dropping in to mention there is a Metroid romhack that "modernizes" the game for those that are annoyed by certain parts of the game, making it a bit more like Super Metroid. If I recall correctly, it's called Metroid + Saving.

It changes the password system into a save system that actually shows you what items you have on the main menu. It also saves how much health you have, so you don't have to grind yourself full every time you resume. It adds in an auto-map that you can access while playing. Oh, and it makes it so you can use the wave and ice beams at the same time, no more losing one when picking up the other.

Pic related.
