You cannot say that Lament of Innocence didn't stray from the traditional formula to just mostly combat related segments. Thus they strayed from the original formula.

Final Fantasy Legend II to get your feet wet. It is a short game, it gets you use to how character growth works with various races, and it is more streamlined than the first game yet you won't feel lost like later entries in the series.

Trust me, you are going to feel lost when you play the Romancing SaGa trilogy or SaGa Frontier.
