I mean, I like sidescrollers but is this such a big loss? The bmups it does have (Zombie Revenge, Dynamite Cop, arguably Power Stone) are all pretty good. The genre more or less disappeared after the 16bit era (barely any on ps1/saturn comparatively) and was replaced with hack-n-slash games, which are about the same. It's not like the earlier consoles had a glut of great racing games or 3D games.

Never happened to me while playing Duke 3D, the Ken's labyrinth game, nor during play with Tekwar.

Yeah the endgame is weak, I'd even say that the Rickenbacker, that spaceship where you have to destroy all the eggs, is where the game takes a turn for me in pretty much every way.

It just becomes a generic FPS at that point, the levels become linear and boring and I don't particularly enjoy the way the plot progression is handled either.

There was something incredibly underwhelming about how both the Body of the Many and Shodan in terms of how they just ended up being bosses in a computer game with HP bars. We're constantly being beaten over the head with their ideologies and their long monologues on everything, but we never have to really confront them on these ideas, just that we can't progress in the game unless we kill them.

The way the guy just says "nah" really didn't work for me either, as though the writer thought the player was an idiot for trying to take any of the story seriously. Which is kind of ironic considering how far up his own ass Ken Levine ends up being with the writing of the Bioshock games.

Also the game really could have used another projectile PSI power or two.

It's a great game, but the reasons why it's good have already been covered pretty well.
