I'm not arguing wheter it was the right financial decision for a company that had a monopoly on the handheld industry or not, the sales prove it was, though again they didn't have major rivals then and wouldn't have until the PSP... I'm just saying that for me, the consumer and player, it was awful having a screen like that, especially 2001, with the GBA SP coming out in 2003 too.

I hated the OG GBA for years because of how it was plain uncomfortable to try playing it, and I missed out on one of my favorite libraries for a few years because of it, nowadays it's just fine.

I guess it would've cost US$50 dollars more and the battery would run out faster, but while that would mean less time playing before changing the batteries, said time would've been more fun.

P.S. As I've mentioned, good for Nintendo and all, they made a good financial decision, but I'm not a business man, I'm a fan, and I felt screwed over then, thankfully now I can pirate all of their stuff.

I think you went for a lot of good stuff, Batman Forever really isn't too good, so you won't miss out on it. I adore the Game Gear, the fact that it had such a subpar battery life means that most of its library either had passwords/saving to the thing and/or was relatively short, which means nothing overstays its welcome, and most of the difficulty comes from... having to master things.

It feels like a SEGA console, with a good arcade direction that we all know and love, nothing will take too much of your time in theory, but it'll go and leave an impression for sure, it's how I like it.

P.S. It's nice how Game Gear can be emulated on a potato nowadays, any smartphone or handheld can run it and let you play it on the go... as it was intented, without having to worry about battery.

I get your point, it's true that *technically* most modern devices with a few GBs or RAM and not awful specifications can emulate most consoles up to the SNES and Genesis just fine, but there's a difference between me doing it on a PC/laptop or smartphone/tablet, even stuff like Amazon's Fire TV Stick or Google's Chromecast, all devices for doing a bunch of stuff, and these handhelds.

I know there's a fine line, but to me that's why it still qualifies, those handhelds are made for the specific intent of playing retro video games, so it can be seen as a retro video games' topic aswell.

It WOULD'VE been a perfect portable SNES if Nintendo added 4 face buttons instead of 2, and gave the OG model, with it's comfortable form factor that felt more like a SNES controller with a screen on it, an actual backlit screen so we'd be able to see what we play easily or in the dark.

I didn't truly get into the GB, GBC and GBA libraries until backlit emulation devices and also smartphones showed up, it's that crucial to me, though I might be alone in this sentiment.

This... and I get the argument of "I want to play on the Switch and not a PC" but in the long run it's cheaper to just hack your Switch or, if you'd prefer not to do that, get a cheap handheld the folks over at /hhg/ shill so much, they're not my cup of tea, but they work and after few months they're cheaper overall than a subscription too. Also, you can download and play any ROM in it.

>I conceded that the GBA screen is particularly dark, but I don't think it's contrarian to say that playing the consoles like everyone played them for decades is okay and that people rushing to cut up original hardware to sloppily install a laggy chink screen with other issues may not actually be the best thing to do.

NTA but while I agree with you that customization is kind of dumb, no one said that it wasn't okay for you to play these consoles how they used to be, you can do that, it's your console, where people have a problem is how you acted as if everyone should do that, when most people find that screen to be too garbage to play on, even back then, we played like that for decades because it was the only option, not because it was good, the GBA SP was a God sent. Again, if you like it then I'm happy for you, but it's not just a matter of having a lamp or not, anon.

I only emulate GBA nowadays, since pretty much every screen is now backlit, its the standard I always wanted and I'm happy with it, no need to get an old console to mod it just to make it just like the new stuff when the new stuff already exists, it's bad for preservation, but whatever.
