His looks to be somewhat more of a general pincushion distortion, from the inward bowing on both sides, where yours only appears to be on the upper left.

It's hard to tell from your photos whether you have a standard Trinitron or a flat "FD" Trinitron, but if it's the latter, it could possibly just be one of the quirks that line has.

19/2043 and 53 seem to predecessors to the M2 in terms of line count and general operation.
From what I've seen, the 20L2 is the M2's successor/replacement.

http://www.retrogamingcables.com/sony-pvm.html - UK based. Also sell SCART cables of decent-ish quality.
http://www.ebay.com/usr/wookieewin - US Based. An anon a few threads back had a problem that may have been traced to one of these cables, but I can't confirm explicitly. If it was the cable at fault, it was in all likelihood a fluke and the seller is still a good choice. They're recommended by retro_console_accessories at the very least.

For geometry and the like, a softmodded Wii would be more useful. Cheaper access to 240p Test Suite than a flashcart.

Lower line count than newer models in around the same size(20" that is). It's older, so you may have to worry about the condition of said set and how worn the tube may be. It may require csync rather than cvid for sync.
That said, if you can find one in decent condition, it'd probably quite a nice monitor.
