>The average good classic static arcade game is like 90% reaction (being good) and 10% memorization.

I'm not sure I'd agree with that ratio exactly, but sure. What I'm getting at is why even though there is difficulty, if level 1 is the same every time I play, I tend to get bored of it pretty fast. Even if level 8 is wicked fun and super hard, if I know just getting there means playing through a bunch of levels I've done many times before it doesn't feel worth my time. Especially when I can play another game that isn't like that.

But also I should say that though I love games, they're only one of my hobbies. So any time I spend on them has always been precious. I would never put someone down for loving to play shmups, it's just never something I've been interested putting time into.

Indeed, fighters are my favorite genre of all time. Even since their most rudimentary days I've thought they're some of the most interesting games.

FPS a little, played the hell out of Tribes 1 and 2, but arena shooters don't grab me enough to invest. Same with RTS which seems cool, but not as cool as fighters so with my limited time I never really got into them.

It's like Rise of the Robots in 3D. Abysmal game from my memory. Only rented it a few times though.

Budokan is largely forgotten since it predates fighters really becoming their own genre and has a very different approach. It's far from perfect, but very interesting to play and winning means both learning all the weapons well and strategizing when to use which, where.

Budokan is essentially a fighting game, but it's from before the genre developed a lot of the traditions people now think of so it's very different but quite interesting.

You have a chi meter and a stamina meter. Chi determines how much damage you do and moving or attacking drains it, while blocking attacks raises it. Stamina is like your health meter but as it runs out you move and attack slower as well.

You pick between staff, nunchuck, kendo sword or karate and go through 12 rounds of a tournament against various opponents using those plus tonfas, naginata, kusaria gama and a couple of others. But you can only use each weapon type 4 times, and losing a round sets you back. So you have to be careful which weapon you choose for each opponent.

It's slow and somewhat clunky, but it's a very interesting take on a fighting game and quite fun in it's own right.

>Somone on /vr/ other than me mentions Budokan

This is a momentous occasion! Budokan is a strange and wonderful game. I wish there was an offshoot of fighters that took it's ideas and kept working with them.

I fucking loved Budokan when I was younger. I'd love to see a new fighter with a weird control scheme like that.

It doesn't quite fit your criteria, but Budokan is pretty damn weird. It has a really complex but hard to get used to controls. A really fun game if you take the time to learn it.

You're truly hilarious. I've also been deep into fighters since before they were even really a genre. Fighting games are in an amazing resurgence now with some of the ones now the best ever made.

Roguelikes are another of my lifelong favorites and similarly experiencing a real golden age right now.

We could get into a big fight about either of these, but I will never ever agree that they're getting worse and I can tell from your attitude that you will just dig your heels in and pout so I won't even bother. Instead, have a nice day being mad about the world. I have games to have fun with.

Nah it's really not, not if you're actually playing with people you like and get along with. Plus the point is more that fighters just aren't designed to be played single player. It's like playing chess against a computer, the real game is all about second guessing and out thinking your opponent and that's what playing the computer leaves out.

And the other great thing is that you really don't have to be "good" at fighters to enjoy them. So long as you and whoever you're fighting are generally close, it's fun no matter what level you're playing at. And it's by far the best way to get good.

There are very few genres that you can have a ton of fun with in your first afternoon ever and then have them continue to be challenging and interesting for as long as you can play and want to master them. I've been into fighters pretty much since they've been around (glorious budokan) and am pretty good. But I watch these high level guys who focus just on them and train seriously and it's amazing. To me that's what makes them so amazing.

I wouldn't mind the style of XIII if it wasn't a KoF. But I loved the old look that was stylish but with generally realistic proportions and would have loved to see it with the same level of detail and animation that XIII had. Athena and Yuri's looks were enough that I didn't want to play it. '98 and 02' are already so perfect I saw no real point putting effort into it. And MK9 came out which while not great, was a lot of fun.

Because Bushido Blade was nowhere near good enough.

Did anyone here play Budokan? It's not very impressive now, but back then fighting games weren't even really a thing yet and it blew my mind.

Practicing all those different weapons, getting ready for the big tournament. I'd never played anything like it.
