every other jester figure is based on him. Batman's Joker, Skyrim's Cicero (the only half-way brilliant character that carries that whole shitgame all by himself narratively) and so forth. there is fucking long tradition in theatre and he has his origin in Italy. the theatre relation can be seen in FF6's opera house, and Figaro(!) castle of course.

I'm fairly sure it's where they got their inspiration from.
