you're talking the NES port right? the arcade game is a spiteful son of a bitch. The PCE port is a bit easier but still no picnic.

the elf sequel is superior in every way.

Don't bother with TG-16 carts or systems. The cards themselves look worse, are either identical to HuCards or often have stupid changes to them (changing the stage order in games like Paranoia and Violent Soldier for no reason; red mask in Splatterhouse). The only Turbo Chip I guess I could recommend is R-Type, but you already have R-Type 1 and 2, so there's no point.

I think the CoreGrafx is the best bet for just HuCards. You might be able to get some modding done, but AV will good for most intents and purposes.

Also, I would disagree that the majority of good games are CD. I think it's split about 50/50, though I am leaning towards giving the HuCards the advantage since those were supported more robustly by third parties (SEGA, Capcom, Konami, Namco) than CD, which was by-and-large an NEC/Hudson show.

Here are some of my favorite HuCards:

Makyo Densetsu, aka Legendary Axe
-great all-around action platformer. Very difficult until you get a feel for a game.

Genpei Toumaden Kannoni, aka Samurai Ghost
-controls are the biggest hurdle, as the fighting style is very unintuitive. If you stick with it, you will have a pretty lengthy sidescrolling action game to enjoy, with lots of varied bosses and interesting locales.

Dragon Saber
-forget Dragon Spirit, the shmup sequel is better in a million different ways. Colorful levels, huge boss creatures, next to no slowdown, and hard as a motherfucker.

Detana Twinbee
-best version of the game, by far. Fun, colorful, and actually beatable!

SideArms: Hyper Dyne
-classic Capcom quality all through. Dirt cheap, better than the CD remake. Just don't forget that you press start to access your weapons menu.

Dungeon Explorer
-a faster-paced Gauntlet. You don't need to worry about the English version; there's no important text in the game (I think all you need to do is talk to the king in the beginning); the towns are purely cosmetic as you don't buy equipment. It's all about dungeon crawling.
