Gen X here, and I appreciate your honesty. Compared to Ocarina of Time (which did come out 2 years later), Mario 64 has aged badly, but I still like the game a whole lot. It's even great to me sometimes, yet overall it has not aged as well as other games from the era. Not to take away from its groundbreaking direction via the camera, or its sublime music (Jolly Roger Bay, Giant Fish Tank..man..) or anything that makes it a classic, but it's flawed. The lighting. And there's something intangibly dark regarding outside the castle. I'll say it, something about the outside of the castle in Mario 64 feels evil. Sure, I'll play the game, but something off there.

Oh and it's funny how MIPS the Rabbit basically died at some point and ended up in Ocarina of Time as just the top of his head. That game goes so far as to mention that the rabbit came from the past and that: "Oh, these are genuine rabbit ears from the animal of legend!"
