and I'm tired of people pretending they were.

Could you imagine Zelda OoT, SM64, Wave Race 64, Mario Kart 64, Star Fox 64 and Godleneye being better games because they were on CD and had more memory? Fuck no.
Can you imagine all those games with horrible loading time like PS1 games? Oh yeah, and it would suck ass.
Along with the dithered and z-buffered graphics, this is why the N64 is still so popular today. Even the zoomers get it. The games just plop in and start playing right away. No wasted time.

Why didn't these shit games make you stop every 5 seconds to clear a wave of enemies before letting you continue onward?

This was the last game Shigeru Miyamoto directed. Is it no wonder there hasn't been a single Nintendo game released since that can compare?

3D games were new, and so we were willing to ignore all the bad that 3d brought with it. Now every time you want to jump on something, instead of just pushing the jump button, you have to adjust the camera view to get an idea of how far the jump is.

I played mario 64 countless times but never have collected all the 120 stars before so a little over a week ago I decided to give it a try, all was going good until the 84 star but then I started to fucking fail as the stars started to get more difficult (to me at least) and its been like 3 days since last played.
Tldr: I don't feel the motivation to collect all the stars but I feel kinda guilty not completing the game. Is it autism or what?

Why is /vr/ so against speedrunners? Is it because you can't match our skills? You know you're missing out the correct way to play pic related, don't you?

None of its sequels surpass it and there's nothing else from its generation and genre that compares. It's the reason to have an N64.

Every now and again a thread will pop up about Super Mario 64 that is about your memories of playing the game when you were young. One recurring theme in these threads is the "feel" of the game. Usually people felt uneasy or even scared of certain parts. Other people dream about it to this day. I know I do.

I think this strange, dream-like feeling comes from the contrast of realistic stuff with unrealistic. Mario clutches his ass and leaps in the air when he's burned. In contrast, he clutches his throat and floats to the surface when he drowns. There are inoffensive little goombas, and then a giant invincible manta ray. (In the book Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, one of the characters having a bad trip sees a giant manta ray coming down on his car and it scares the fuck out of him. When I read that, the first thing I thought of was SM64 because the manta ray scared me as much as the eel.)

There are other things. Draw-distance could be unnerving. When you didn't understand it, it just seemed like things were phasing in and out of reality. The 2d sprites were weird, too; everything else was 3d and could be observed from all sides, so why were the trees always facing you? As a kid, you probably didn't even consciously notice these things, but they surely contributed to the atmosphere.

I still have SM64 dreams that sometimes become nightmares of being stuck in voids after clipping through walls, oversized enemies coming at me with no regard for the games rules or physics, being in water with no surface and my health meter ticking down, all from the perspective of the camera behind Mario as if I am the camera.

So, how has this game stuck with you? What parts of the game had an effect on you that wasn't the effect they were intended to have? And other such things like that. Some will call it autism, but I know plenty of you can relate.

Why does this game possess such mystical qualities, even today?

Yoshi's Island and Super Mario 64 were both leagues better than Super Mario World.

SMW was still a great game though, no question. Easily one of the top ten 2d platformers.

What Mario game is your favorite from the series? My favorite is Mario 64.

I re-played Super Mario 64 recently. It hasn't held up a whole lot, but I remember being nostalgically interested in it for two reasons:

1. The star statue in the garden says "L IS REAL 2041" (and not "Eternal Star", you're wrong) so Luigi is definitely in the game somewhere, hackers just haven't found him yet.

2. The Big Boo's Haunt stage occasionally plays a Boo's laughter. Not their usual laughter when a Boo is on-screen, it's some rare and random event. I've heard this from people and I think it might have happened to me once, so maybe this isn't so crazy.
