With that "mysterious voice" situation and how people react at TAG2, i feel like IF there ever is another Doom game, it should just have a different take on the setting because if anything, building up a universe/lore is the actual off-pattern action when previous games have their own canons/aesthetics/styles/etc and most id franchises had their premise created out of emptyness.
It would be easier to see Doom as a setting that is awkwardly presented, because its messyness inspired reinterpretations and creativity for years.
There's a danger to see a series being rebooted too many times and giving too much creativity but if a certain line is met, it could help Doom break out of an enforced set of rules that wasn't there to begin it.
It's a way to look at art like pic related and certain mods.
Simply adding something like a new mechanics, design or concept already feels like expanding this series.
If people were more invested in the setting, they'd only see contradictions and more problems.
Besides that, we had people already exploring the setting as seen in some mods and fan content.
