Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is better for starters, it has a tutorial mode wich explains commands and combat, different game modes, there's a lot of species and jobs to build your character, religions add flavor to the game, the dungeon is varied and feels more alive, better than Corridors and Rooms: the roguelike
But if you really want to start with nethack do as everyone says and run dwarf valkirie
