Lunar 2 is a direct sequel to Lunar 1. Lots of tie-ins with the first game including, cameos, familiar faces, plot twists, easter eggs and surprises only people who played the first game will get.

Outside of better visuals though, I think the Sega CD version of Lunar 2 is superior. More cut scenes, sub plots, more complicated dungeons, and more challenging.

Also features the best character in any JRPG. Pic related.
