If Eternal had a particular weakness besides setting aside combat with platforming in places, it was the referential shit. 2016 seemed like it did it right. Kept it with a simple "Rip and tear, until it is done," and some classic hidden maps that were themselves a callback to Doom 2's hidden Wolfenstein levels. Good uses of references that the game itself didn't necessarily rely on. Eternal tripled down on those references to the point where people were straight up calling him doomguy and the autistic demonkiller himself was literally muttering "rip and tear" at one point. Even if his exhaustion could make that make sense, it didn't work; the delivery was all wrong. It made the whole thing feel like what DNF wanted to do, but the fact is Duke ain't Doom.

Oh shit my bad. Yeah, aside from an actually cool looking cutscene where he's bathed in yellow fire, the Eternal Archvile's fire is generally orange from my experience.

Yeah, I wouldn't bank on a big money Hexen. I can hope for something like that but more independent, similar to Zeno, though. That could almost definitely happen.
