The N64 didn't screwed with the layout, it have 6 buttons but none of them get in your way when you're trying to press the two main buttons.

It's diamond shape. This prototype shows better how the button disposition should be, with a 45º angle, not almost 90º. I never complained about it being 4 or 6.
