I'm trying out Quake 1 again. Every time I play it, I beat episode 1 and get a few levels into episode 2 and then just kinda drop it. It's not that I don't like Quake, it just hasn't really resonated for me like Doom has. It just feels like Quake is Doom, but with more bullet-spongey enemies that feel more tedious to fight.

Is Quake intended to be "pistol-started" (well, shotgun start) the same way Doom is? That is, was every level designed and playtested with shotgun start? Is there a way to easily play it like that?

Is there some kind of "PRO QUAKE MONSTER STRATS" that I can look at?
