disagree completely. nudooms already suffer because you don't kill enemies with guns, you stun them for a melee finisher. a shooter where using firearms effectively feels like a failure. guns were also ineffective in the shadow warrior reboot.
using magic instead of BUCKSHOT AND NAILS is lame as fuck. directly the opposite of not touching the series' roots. the player char should be low-tech no-magic silent guy, in a hostile arcane world. it's a contrast thing, quite simple really, yet they keep fucking it up.
disagree on throwing in "wife and children" story, as well. like a love ballad in the middle of a black metal album. I really wonder what's wrong with people defending this.

I might have been part of that conversation 'cause I remember it as well. The idea that the world Ranger comes from is sort of like ours, but went in a different direction tech-wise, a la Fallout never inventing the microtransistor. The tech has gotten advanced enough to have interdimensional slipgates, on the fly instant healing devices, and so on, but the tech was never miniaturized because no one ever saw a reason to. Instead of compacting everything into a palm-device or a magic box the size of a suitcase, they just built giant, sprawling facilities to contain literal hallways of beeping machines and wall panels with a purpose long forgotten as everything is in a constant state of decay from lack of upkeep. Weapon tech never advanced beyond good ol' lead and copper projectiles with the exception of bulky, heavy prototype laser cannons only used by elite human troops and the Thunderbolt which might not even be of human origin given that it's never found in any idbase levels or even near Grunts/Enforcers in other worlds (other than deathmatch maps). There's no cool power armor or virtual HUD map add-ons like Doomguy has access to, just varying strengths of ballistic armor and a standard-issue open face helmet that looks like someone hewed it out of a chunk of granite. Enforcers get flimsy gas masks and the Bio Suit required for delving in the horribly polluted water looks more like a heavy fabric 20th century diving suit.

I don't have a problem with most of QC's lore updates/additions, but I could go without the explicit intervention of the Old Ones in that regard. I prefer the idea of mankind fucking around with rusty pipes and portals until they discover slipgate jumping on their own and all the negative consequences that come with it.

im 22 and at some point i picked an entrypoint(first person perspective) and decided to try all the greatest games in it. at the time being into halo reach i ended up trying marathon and then doom on xbox arcade. i learned about emulation on our family facebook machine and got an interest in computers and older games in general. i played a lot more older fps too just to try them, from quake to blood to rebel moon to corridor 7 to quiver, cybermage, necrodome and mods and sequels. i just gave everything a shot while i was creating that megatorrent of older fps (i dont know if its still seeded)

while i was exposed to quake 2 multiplayer and redneck rampage growing up, i think people know what they like and will explore older games in that genre looking for an experience to capture that magic even if it isn't familiar to them. and thankfully with that boomer meme quake is in the limelight for a little while longer, i guarantee people are getting exposed to the series because of it which is great
