The fact that anyone would self-identify as a retro gamer makes me absolutely sick to my stomach.
It's disgusting. The fact that retro gaming has become a "scene" for a bunch of portly manchildren to get around and talk about how great old games are while flexing their "gamer" cred is legitimately cringe worthy. Who in their right mind would ever go to a retro convention? What's the point? To smell BO all weekend and see a bunch of overpriced games? No thanks, I'll keep my dignity.
Sure, I have a whole room full of games myself, but I never talk to anyone about it. I don't invite sceneters or anyone else over to play except my normal friends who are visiting for other reasons anyway. The other day, for example, I was at a game store perusing their stock, when a posse of five or six fat 35 year old "retro" gamers came in stinking up the place and being unusually annoying. One of them actually had a Mega Man shirt on, embarassing! They started talking loudly and acting completely gauche: "DUDE REMEMBER THIS GAME LOL" "NO WAY, THIS GAME WAS LIKE THE BEST FIGHTER ON GENESIS." It was absolutely off-putting. I had to leave before I was even able to finalize my purchases.
