This game is tough to like, bun once you get to it's pretty fun.

It's a shame it's not very appropriate to just pick up and play (I'm not good enough to do it without building up stats and that takes time)

You can select what to upgrade in the NES version too, but they gave different point costs to each type of upgrade (life is cheaper than attack and magic iirc)

Plus, the FDS version sets all your levels back to the lowest level you currently have when you save and quit: so if you have your level 8 attack but level 2 magic and life, when you resume playing you'd go back to level 2 attack. That's kind of bullshit
