I love the aesthetic in general but something about it's use in horror games feels so right. While it's been neat to see indie devs try to recreate the feeling of them I don't think they quite "get it" really. That balance of having a vague comprehension of the physical shape of what you're looking at but the textures and detail being so primitive that it keeps it relatively vague is a hard balance to reproduce.

Silent Hill is amazing at this, SH1 in particular is just amazing with how ridiculously complex or detailed arbitrary things are.
>the sound of the radio reflects how close an enemy is and which direction they're coming
>Harry has three unique falling animations that can only be seen near the start of the game in the only area with ledges
>the puppet nurses and doctors have three variants with a unique face texture and slightly different stats
>Infected Cybil can run out of ammo in her boss fight
Just walking around tbe town and seeing the stores on the street is entertaining, wish later SH titles kept this more open exploration.

Honestly I still think it's one of the best looking games I've ever seen, playing it a few years ago in the complete dark was one of the best gaming experiences I've had in years.

The first three SH games aged like wine visually. Even if their graphics are outdated their art direction puts them above even modern releases despite using an "realistic" artstyle.

It's weird, I feel like if you were to look at them purely from gameplay alone then SH3 really would be the obvious best game but I just find SH1 to be better still. Even as good as it looks for a fifth gen game it shows its age far more then the ps2 entries but as an overall package it feels the most cohesive I feel like. I think nailed the balance of an explorable overworld and dungeons to explore, later enties really cut down on wandering through city streets. It's only major downside I would say is it being too forgiving on supplies, I think SH3 really improved upon this aspect from SH1 and SH2.

As a zoomer I played tbe series for tbe first time this year and was blown away by SH1, you are missing out. SH1 may just offee the most authentic location of any ps1 game. The various parts of town and dungeons you visit have insane detail and feel truly lived in. It's hard to describe but although SH2/3 are fantastic games SH1 has a real alternative "grunge" feel to that isn't as prevalent as later entries. It was a team of talented people making something both cutting edge but original.
