The mechanics are pretty simple, it's a 2D point and click adventure game. It ignored the various types of pointer objects pioneered by KQ5(and others) and in 1992 went somewhat it's own way. The objects were your only way to interact with things beyond the pointer, which could often result in unintended consequences if the thing you clicked on was deadly.

However, it did dispense with a lot of the clutter and made timed puzzles a little less guesswork. The weirdest part of the first two games was an odd obsession with gems, they were the most common item to find in the game.

Beyond the basic controls, each game also had a magic system of sorts, depending on title.
