Have you played F/F Final?
It's rather difficult.
As someone said, 3 is pretty hard too.
But yeah after Winky Soft stopped working on them, the series became easier.

From what I could see, it looks similar to the Super Robot Wars series, although I couldn't tell what's going on during battles, if you have control over it or you just watch.
