>WB3 for example includes a lot of little tweaks,
Yeah, it's really weird because Dragon's Curse is arguably closer to the original Master System version than the Game Gear port, which released after WBV:MWIII. In a lot of ways, I feel like the TurboGrafx-16 version is a lot closer to the game the devs really wanted to make. Jap manual even contains a few isolated references to Monster Land so it was still thought of as a sequel despite Hudson's trademark removal.
>new art like portraits for the shopkeeper/healer etc,
I heard these designs were just ripped from the WBV:MWIII NPCs. Also there was no good reason to get rid of the pig, maybe the church palette swap because it's a bit out of place but not entirely.
>and removes the Charm Stone mechanics,
Eh they just needed to rebalance/rethink it in a few places, not throw the baby out with the bathwater.

I think the 2017 remake developers got the idea to change up the Charm Stones not from the Game Gear version, but from Vile's 2007 TurboGrafx-16 (Dragon's Curse) fan-recreation, which they were aware of. Speaking of which, ANOTHER group of fans got their hands on the source code on the TurboGrafx-16 version as opposed to the Master System version, and they're currently making their own widescreen remake. It's pretty lowkey right now, but it'd be fun if it got officialized like the 2017 remake.
