There are also some arcade games like Bubble Bobble that aren't vertical but have a very square resolution. It's 256x224. You can tell by looking at the slightly oblong bubbles that it was meant to be stretched horizontally to ~4:3, but I still think it looks pretty nice here. Tbh in the modern era where all displays now use pixels, I find it often looks nicer playing with square pixels rather than stretching content to 4:3 as was intended on older non-pixel displays. There are obviously exceptions to that though where it's really better to stretch.
