Rand can roll, fast travel, ignores encounters, arguably reliable.

You don't actually need missable shamans at all, normal Rand will work as good.
You are supposed to fish or hunt in the beginning for fast funds.
You can cook infinite money if you've chosen a cooking carpenter.
You can get Bolt Tonfa and Rainbow Robe just after getting the whale by collecting 4 Token pieces in Capitan, Bleu/Deis hideout, Tunlan/Melodia and Guntz and trading them via minigame to the treehouses carpenter. You can save in your town and reset the game until you win those.
