Yeah, you could tell because of his white overall.
I think this was common knowledge for non-zooms.

YI went for a completely different art direction (even though it also takes elements from previous SMB games).
I just see SMW too similar to SMB3 to understand your "fisher price" appreciation. Both look very similar to me. SMB3 has the stageplay aesthetic here and there, SMW has the abstract geometric mountains, but all in all both games share the greeny grass lands, the underground caves, etc. And both are very colorful and vibrant.
The only Mario I see as more gritty is SMB1 (and 2J, too, although that one added the eyes/faces to objects, which became a series staple). SMB1 still had some of that "construction site" theme, coming from the original DK, and the greeny lands/treetops taken from DK Jr, but most of SMB1 has the industrial/construction theme, with all these bricks and structure iron plate platforms.
SMB2USA already introduced the more bright colorful and "fisher price" art direction, which was furthered in 3 and World.

Before the NES, there was the Coleco Vision, a gen 2 system that was on par with the MSX computer in terms of graphics, and because of that, received various ports from Konami, even exclusive games too.
Coleco also got faithful ports of arcade games. This was a late gen 2 system, so it was short-lived, but it's a testament that gen 2 isn't just colored squares like Atari 2600.

Based.
I think my actual first contact with anything Nintendo was also Coleco Vision, it might have been DK Jr. first, although I also had original DK.

33,
probably something on coleco vision, since that's my earliest memory with video games.
DK Jr was my favorite.
It's hard to describe for people who started with newer games, but these old games had a certain magic to them. Older games with black backgrounds really bring me back in time. I remember being a toddler, staring at the screen, totally immersed, enjoying being able to move some guy on the TV, it was magical. Now I take it for granted.
