He based its appearance on this gun (Algimec, an obscure 9mm carbine which flopped commercially after failing to get any interest by Italian police), probably because it had cool retro futuristic looks which *sort of* line up with the generic rifle in Doom.
Think of it a bit like Aliens, where the guns used were actually just old WW2 era M1A1 Tommyguns shooting blanks (and with a bunch of stuff bolted on), but in canon of the movie they were futuristic pulse rifles. This here is a completely unremarkable pistol caliber carbine, but it has kind of a cool look to it, so you can put it in Doom and say that it's also some sort of sci-fi assault rifle.
